Photo Book Guide

What started as design and inspirational lessons for a Photo Book Club several years ago has now been packaged together to a fantastic resource for you. The Photo Book Club Guide will show you how to make a specifically themed photo book from start to finish while also providing you with design lessons to help take your book from blah to amazing.

In 143 pages, the Photo Book Guide is divided into 3 sections: Book Study, Design Lessons, and Special Project Book Project. Each page is beautifully designed and carefully organized to share with you information to keep you motivated to start and finish a photo book.

Book Study

Imagine participating in a Book Club discussing books that will inspire your creativity and motivate you to take action! That’s exactly what these Book Study lessons are about. I share my key summaries and take-aways so you feel creatively inspired.

Even if you’ve read the books, these lessons will remind you of key thoughts and show you how to apply them to your creative endeavors.

As you can see from the sample pages, I use a layout design to boil down the essential text into easily-digestable content. I use pull-out boxes with larger text boxes to call out specific quotes or ways to use the book to challenge you.

Design Lessons

I loved preparing these design lessons!!! In this section, I cover a few foundational design concepts that have a big impact for designing layouts and working on a photo book.

These lessons illustrate how with a few simple yet intentional strategies you can transform standard layouts into striking, professional layouts. And key to designing photo books, is to make overwhelming. Add design elements to section pages or page numbers and you’ve immediately elevated your book design.

In these sample pages, I share strategies and examples on how planes are defined throughout design. Then on the next page, I convey how I translated those concepts into potential layouts for a photo book. I provide a range from simple to more complex to give you a range for inspiration.

Special Photo Book Project

Often I recommend people who haven’t finished a photo book project to start with a simple, themed photo book. This could be a book documenting a summer vacation or your favorite photos from the summer. With this as a starting point, it’s easier to limit the photos you need to select and the pages you need to prepare.

It’s also easy to test out different design ideas or to be more creative with your layouts when working on a special photo book project.

This section illustrates how to walk through a special themed photo book from start to finish. For this example, I use what I refer to as a Two Days in 6 Months Photo Book. Document a Day in the Life, separated by 6 months and design a photo book. I walk you through how I get inspiration by analyzing magazines, how I select photos for this project, and share two screen-share videos showing you how I design the pages.

“Tips to Inspire my Progress”

I’d like to make a calendar/ journal with photos of my 4 children for the grandparents. It has to contain monthly – maybe weekly calendars with possibilities for them to make entries. I can’t wait for tips and tricks and occasional encouraging quotes.

“Help with the Overwhelm!”

As usual, the overwhelming “where/how to start”, and then the distractions that being when I start searching for ideas — new things to learn, new classes to take, etc. etc. I never end up actually starting. Then, the perfection-ism in me is the final straw, and I just give up. Not this time! 🙂
